TRADES ACADEMY
Trades academies aim to get young New Zealanders engaged in education and equip tomorrow’s workforce with relevant skills by linking with the wider industry training system.
Trades academies focus on delivering trades and technology programmes to secondary students based on partnerships between schools, tertiary institutions (in Tamaki College’s case, Manukau Institute of Technology), industry training organisations and employers. In our Trades Academy, students in years 12 and 13, who are interested in a career in trades are able to combine study at a trades academy with studies towards their National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) and a nationally transferable tertiary qualification Level 1, 2 or 3.
The Ministry of Education state that the purpose of a Trades Academy is to:
• motivate more students to stay engaged in learning and training by providing them with a greater number of options for study
• provide students with clear pathways post-school by giving them a head start on training for vocational qualifications and smooth access to employment
• improve the responsiveness of schools to business and economic needs.
Trades academies are the first example of a secondary-tertiary programme that will provide a broad range of learning opportunities for senior secondary students interested in a trades career, to ensure they stay engaged in education for longer. The programme is delivered through partnerships developed between schools, tertiary and industry organisations.
The programme is full time for students already enrolled at school and
• consists of both secondary and tertiary elements
• includes appropriate work experience where this forms part of the tertiary or secondary part of the programme.
Intended outcomes for students:
The programme must lead to a worthwhile qualification for the students enrolled in the trades academy. This is a minimum of NCEA level 2. Students must also be working toward a trades-related nationally-transferrable tertiary qualification in Level 1, 2 or 3 as part of the programme.
SERVICE ACADEMY
Service academies are military-focused programmes delivered within schools.
The purposes of a Service Academy are to:
• encourage students to stay engaged in learning by providing a motivating and disciplined programme;
• help students to gain improved qualifications and help them prepare to move successfully into the Services, the workforce or further education and training.
Each Service Academy will offer around 20 students a one-year programme. Students will be expected to:
• Work towards and attain a minimum of NCEA Level One mathematics and English, as well as other credits from the National Qualifications Framework appropriate to their interests and career choices.
• Participate in a range of motivating and challenging learning experiences provided in association with the New Zealand Defence Force’s Youth Development Unit. These include a two-week induction course, a leadership course, and advanced leadership course, a coast to coast course and other outdoor-based activities.
Each Service Academy will offer around 60 students a one-year programme. Students and their family will be expected to:
• work towards students attaining a minimum of NCEA Level Two as well as other credits from the National Qualifications Framework to ensure pathways into a defence force pathway, tertiary study or career choices.
• participate in a range of motivating and challenging learning experiences.
TEREORA ACADEMY
The Tereora Academy is an initiative designed to introduce Pacific students to a career in the health sector. The programme has been set up in Tamaki College and is funded by Pasifika Futures Limited with the aim of keeping young people involved in science and equipping them with relevant skills so that they may be work ready in any areas of the health sector.
The purpose of the Tereora Academy is to:
• encourage students to stay engaged in learning by providing an all round holistic support plan for their family;
• intentionally interrupt the education cycle with purposeful connections into a science pathway
• remove barriers to help students prepare to move successfully into the Services, the workforce or further education and training under the four areas of STEM.
• work towards students attaining a minimum of NCEA Level Two Science as well as other credits from the National Qualifications Framework to ensure pathways into a science or medical interests, tertiary study or career choices.
• participate in a range of motivating and challenging learning experiences.
DRIVING ACADEMY
Believed to be the ONLY SCHOOL IN AOTEAROA with a fully dedicated Driving School, our Driving Academy begun in 2012 in partnership with the Tamaki Regeneration Company.
The interest in the programme from our students saw the demand on the service grow to a point where we needed to ‘upgrade’ our training vehicle. In 2018 this was realised with the generous support of Rotary Auckland East.
Our driving programme is now funded by our Trades Academy for our Trades students and Tereora Academy for all others.
We are fortunate to have two driving instructors who are completing their instructors endorsement and are looking forward to running the programme fully in June 2022.
We have revitalised the programme to ensure our young people stay the course with preparing to sit their test or practical. All lessons are conducted in Period 7 (after school) so as to not distrupt their classroom learning time.
The purpose of the Driving Academy is to:
• supplement the knowledge of practical driving and to prepare the students for the driver license they wish to obtain.
• remove barriers from employment pathways
